Can foreigners own property in Costa Rica?
Unlike some other countries, Costa Rican law makes no substantial
differences between its citizens and foreigners with regards to
rights of ownership of any kind. This means that it doesn't matter
where you come from. If you have a valid passport with you, you
can purchase a car, a boat or a piece of land just like any "Tico."
However, according to the law, there are a number of different
designations/types of property for which some restrictions may
apply and therefore, should be carefully considered. For more information please refer to our downloadable Guide to Purchasing Property in Costa Rica.
Why the Pacific Coast?
Costa Rica's Green Coast has some of the most stunning scenery in the world. This is the Costa Rica that you've dreamed about: lush green jungle, beautiful beaches, and colourful wildlife. From the wild shores of Palo Seco beach to the mountain ridges of Dominical, this region is truly a tropical paradise.
What is the lifestyle like in the area?
The lifestyle in Manuel Antonio can best be described as "laid back ". There are an abundance of activities for all types of people here. On any given day you can go sport fishing, river rafting, on a horseback ride on the beach or just hang out at the National Park and watching the monkeys swinging by as you take in the tropical sun on a beautiful beach.
Quepos/Manuel Antonio also offers many different restaurants and bars for those who enjoy the night life. There is truly something for everyone here in Costa Rica !
I am considering buying property I saw advertised on the internet. They are asking for a deposit up front. What do you suggest?
We do not recommend ever giving a deposit for property sight unseen, especially to an escrow account represented by the sellers. The only case where this would be acceptable would be when you already have a past business history with the party in question, and a trust relationship has been established.
What are property taxes in Costa Rica?
Property taxes are only .25% (one quarter of one percent).
What is the education system like?
There are several good private elementary and high schools in the area. Classes are mostly taught in Spanish. The school year is February to December with a 3 week break at the end of June.
